The Wyoming County 4-H Livestock Sale will be Saturday, Sep. 3, this year at the Wyoming County Fair, west of Meshoppen.

A Buyer’s Appreciation Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. with a Livestock Auction at noon at the Wyoming County Community Fairgrounds off Rt. 6, west of Meshoppen.

The 4-H auction is an exciting event as it’s the culmination of member’s project efforts.

4-H youth spend several months caring for, feeding and working with their animals in order to show them and ultimately sell them at the fair. When you purchase a 4-H livestock project at the auction you are a 4-H member reach their final project goal along with receiving responsibility raised, high-quality products that are raised under the 4-H quality animal management program.

The sale is an excellent chance for local businesses, families and corporations such as yours to support the 4-H program and youth; while at the same time providing high quality, home grown beef, goat, lamp, pork, and rabbit for your family and employees. Additionally, you will gain free advertising as a buyer in various newspapers and publications, signage throughout fair week and at the annual 4-H livestock sale along with other communications throughout the year.

If you are interested in being a buyer at the sale, however you’re not interested in taking ownership of the animal or send it to a local butcher for processing’ we have several alternatives for you to be a buyer without having to worry about what to do with the animal. We offer a “donation/buy-back” program where you can purchase the animal from a 4-H member and then donate that animal back to the sale. The funds that animal gains in the buy-back can be donated to our scholarship program or barn improvement fund. These two funds have had a profound impact on supporting our senior 4-H livestock members in their continuing education as well as securing funds to keep out barns and facilities clean, safe and functional.

4-H is a 501-C3 non- profit organization, therefore all or part of purchased livestock may be used as a tax deduction.

Buyer registration begins at 10 a.m. on sale day near the livestock barn. Buyers need to register for a number in advance of the sale by simply filling out a registration form with name, address, phone number and driver’s license information. Once your registration is complete you receive a number for bidding during the auction along with a catalog showing all the animals being sold, lot numbers, seller’s names and weights of the animals.

As the animals are brought into the ring, the auctioneer will sell each animal by the pound. When an animal you would like to purchase is in the sale ring, signal the auctioneer by raising your hand. If you receive the final bid, hold up your buyer number so you can be announced and recorded.

If you are successful in bidding and purchase an animal during the auction; return with your number to the checkout table to pay for your purchase with cash or a good check at the conclusion of the sale. You will get a card for each lot that you purchased on which you will designate where to send the animal for processing. You will have the choice of approximately four butchers which are listed in the catalog with their prices.

Sale animals are not permitted to leave the fairgrounds until 7 a.m., Sunday morning. Animals will be shipped to the processor of your choice at no additional cost. If you’re taking your purchase home or hauling it personally, you may pick your animal up Sunday morning at 7 a.m.

As the buyer, you are responsible for contacting the butcher at the beginning of the week to discuss the types of cuts you would like and how you would like them to be prepared and packaged. When the meat is ready, you will get a call from the processor to pay for and pick up your purchase.
